Rudyard Kipling wrote “Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, Lest we forget”
The Bible speaks of the danger of God’s people forgetting Him and Psalm 59 reminds us of the fact that God will go to great lengths, to remind us of Him.
Deut. 6 gives us 3 challenges, 3 things about God that we should never forget:
Remember your redemption :
“Then watch yourself, lest you forget the Lord who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery”
Israel was caught in slavery: as much as we were caught up in sin, before being set free by Jesus. Israel was protected by the blood of the slaughtered lamb, as much as we today are protected by the Blood of the Lamb. 1 Cor 5:7 For our Passover Festival is ready, now that Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Eph 1:7 For by the blood of Christ we are set free, that is, our sins are forgiven. How great is the grace of God
Remember your resources :
Just as God gave to Israel – cared for them, protected and provided for them, so He gives and provides for us. 1 Cor 4:7 Who made you superior to others? Didn't God give you everything you have? Well, then, how can you boast, as if what you have were not a gift? We get so attached to the things we have. Our toys determine who we are. No – we are stewards, trustees, and caretakers of all we have. It belonged to God in the first place. If I lend you my tools, I expect you to take good care.
Psalm 24:1 the world and all that is in it belong to the LORD; the earth and all who live on it are his.
Remember your requirements;
Deut. Refers to the 10 Commandments – God’s requirements for us – God’s moral principles for our lives, our families and even our nation. These are even requirements for our future. Following Him brings blessing. Forgetting Him brings judgement.
How do we remember these requirements:
- Hear the Lord : there is power in listening
- Love the Lord
- Instruct the family : Live an example
- Apply the Word: whose report will you believe.
