From the time King Saul went down to the cave of the witch of Endor until now, people who are desperate for certainty in the face of their fears for tomorrow have been the willing victims of soothsayers, fortune-tellers, spirit mediums, and their kind.
It is a sad reflection on society that the elements of superstition, fear, curiosity, and insecurity are so strong within that these assorted "charlatans" are able to live by preying on others' weaknesses.
Why are people so gullible?
Because they have such a desire to know the secrets of tomorrow. Think about this:
I. The secrets of tomorrow.
The mistakes of yesterday and the confusion and tension of today are very real, but concerning tomorrow we need to be aware.
A. What are tomorrow's secrets?
1. Will tomorrow bring prosperity or poverty? That secret is locked hard and fast in tomorrow's vault (James 4:13-14).
2. Will tomorrow bring success or failure? Who can say? Sometimes we seem bound for success, and then some unplanned factors enter in and we experience disappointment.
3. Will tomorrow bring love, making two lives the mutual fulfillment and complement of one another? Or will tomorrow bring heartbreak, loneliness, and despair?
4. Will tomorrow bring health with all its enjoyment of hope or sickness with its sufferings and handicaps?
5. Will tomorrow bring joy or sorrow?
6. Will tomorrow bring life or death?
B. Since these unknown possibilities are real, with what attitude should we face tomorrow?
1. Some face an unknown tomorrow with the pagan attitude "Let us eat, drink, and be merry for tomorrow we die."
2. Some face an unknown tomorrow with an attitude of utter futility. "What is the use?" they ask.
3. Some face an unknown tomorrow with the only attitude that will see us through, that of Christian faith. Tomorrow is safe in the keeping of infinite love. Tomorrow is God's day.
Mat 6:25 "If you decide for God, living a life of God-worship, it follows that you don't fuss about what's on the table at mealtimes or whether the clothes in your closet are in fashion. There is far more to your life than the food you put in your stomach, more to your outer appearance than the clothes you hang on your body. 26 Look at the birds, free and unfettered, not tied down to a job description, careless in the care of God. And you count far more to him than birds. 27 "Has anyone by fussing in front of the mirror ever gotten taller by so much as an inch? 28 All this time and money wasted on fashion--do you think it makes that much difference? Instead of looking at the fashions, walk out into the fields and look at the wildflowers. They never primp or shop, 29 but have you ever seen color and design quite like it? The ten best-dressed men and women in the country look shabby alongside them. 30 "If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers--most of which are never even seen--don't you think he'll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you?
